Glitch Art

What’s the difference between signal and noise?

Signal is the way something is transmitted. The signal is always there, in modern society we try to have the most transparent signal possible, so that we don’t hear or see the signal the message is transmitted through. Noise is when the signal is interrupted and the transmission method is brought to our attention. Glitch art is the way an artist can show their marks in digital material. When looking at a painting where you can see brush strokes and marks, or looking at a ceramic object and the artist’s fingerprints are smushed into the form, we see the object and the material all at once. Same with Glitch art, the artist is trying to show their medium. I think this is how I would describe when “noise” becomes meaningful. The noise of the object, shows the material and gives multiple layers to the art object. Both the artist and viewer make the decision whether the noise is meaningful; the artist puts out what they believe is meaningful and the viewer decides if they agree.

What do you think of my noise?
