3D Printing

I received my 3D printed container from the SUNY New Paltz FabLab. The process I really enjoyed with this project was the virtual designing. I found it very neat that creating geometric and radial designs is precise and easy with TinkerCAD. I didn’t get to see the actual printing of my object, but overall it came out successful.

The one thing I dislike is the material; aesthetically, the plastic feeling and pixilation is not my normal style. I am interested in organic shapes. While designing in TinkerCAD, I intended the form to be very rounded, organic and shell-like. I am considering sanding the object, but would like to experiment using the texture as a stamp for ceramic objects first. I may also make a two part mold, where I could reproduce this form in ceramic materials and glaze it.

Using the 3D printer as a tool to create vessels out of more organic materials is something I am gaining interest in. After doing my artist research on Neri Oxman, I can see the astounding ways 3D fabrication can augment our lives and transform our relationship to the designed objects. I’ve researched printing with glass, ceramics and metals and would like to experiment with this.

I think for me, my frustration comes from learning a very new way of designing and using a material. I think I strive for my work to have a certain quality and meaning for me, I am just not there yet utilizing these tools and processes.

Here it is!
