Self Portraits in Clay

The students in the Triform Pottery class have been sculpting ceramic busts since January. In the beginning we focused on creating different parts of our busts.

Starting with two pinch bowls that we connected together to make a sphere, we had heads! Next, we started to build up coils in an oval shape for the base of the bust. Week after week, everyone worked on bit by bit. The chests grew and we could add two pinch bowls as shoulders. We created necks by taking a cylindrical piece of clay and pushing a dowel through the middle; we rolled the clay on the table with the dowel and the center opened up, our neck “tubes” transformed. After our structures were together, students began to imagine who their bust would be, and what they would look like. Some students chose themselves, even a female pirate. After 4 months of constructing, here are the student’s projects, ready for firing.

After they’re fired, students will paint their figures with acrylics. In the mean time, we will talk about patterns, surface decoration and stencils. I’m looking forward to the types of images they may want to put on their sculptures, that will relate to their theme. Students will also have the choice to paint without patterns, it’s really up to them.
