Moving Image

When I heard the project was going to be “moving image” I immediately thought of a Zoetrope at Art Omi Sculpture Park.

Check out Freya Powell if that sounds interesting.

So, Jane started looking for images that might work and found this series of clouds split up in a window. While Jane began constructing the wheel, I started experimenting with the motor and thinking of ways to create the switch and a sturdy base.

From my experience, I think the best order is to get the motor working, the circuit working, figure out the switch and then start to think of how it could be mounted within or on an object. I knew I wanted the machanical elements to be hidden, but the switch visable and useable for viewers. I started to construct on base out of plastic, but found it to be less forgiving than cardboard, so I switched. I poked the wired through the base to connect the circuit.

I experimented with a few different options for the connection of motor to wheel. First, I found this Motor with a little part already attached. I didn’t get to try it out because one of the wires broke while I was installing it into the first plastic base I made. Finally, after getting a new motor I decided to use a bottle cap as the connection for the wheel. I hot glued this on to the axle of the motor, and then used that flat surface to glue the wheel Jane created.
